How Does Your Favourite Restaurant Rank?

Think ST Solutions, an Australian consultancy in the food service sector and to food regulators, has produced a YouTube video clip to better inform consumers about making informed choices when choosing a restaurant or cafe.

Consumers don’t rank food safety as an important factor to consider when selecting a restaurant or café, according to a new online poll.

In the poll of regular restaurant goers conducted by Think ST Solutions none rated food safety ahead of the menu or atmosphere of the restaurant.

“While some may think that the result is not surprising, it was surprising that no one mentioned the cleanliness or hygiene of a restaurant or café was important to them,” said Director of Think ST Solutions, Andrew Thomson. “But as we eat out in restaurants and cafes more frequently, the risk of food poisoning increases.”

In recent weeks, food poisoning outbreaks have occurred in Victoria and Queensland with many individuals being hospitalised after allegedly eating contaminated food; and many food businesses in the Adelaide CBD failed the health inspection test as recently reported in the South Australian media.

Mr Thomson says when eating out, diners should be more aware of the cleanliness and hygiene of the place where they are eating and observe whether staff are following good hygiene practices.

Mr Thomson has a few tips of things to look for:

  • Being greeted by friendly, neat, clean looking and well-dressed staff
  • No offensive odours anywhere in the restaurant.
  • The cleanliness of the restrooms, they may not be sweet smelling, but must be clean and tidy.
  • When the waiter or waitress serves your food, see if their hands and fingernails are clean and their thumb is not in the food.
