Food Made With Love And Shared With Joy

When a Nonna or Nonno place a plate of food before you they are not just giving you food for your body, they are giving nourishment for your soul!

Government House in Adelaide was chosen to celebrate 20 years of creating traditional Italian fare made with love, servicing the Italian community. The celebration also marked the renaming of PISA Italian Meal Service to Nonna’s Cucina. In his speech, His Excellency the Honourable Hieu Van Le AC Governor of South Australia, a lover of Italian cuisine, congratulated everyone involved in this remarkable success story.

Nonna’s Cucina, is a community run, government funded community meal service.

With a dedicated group of one hundred and thirty volunteers ranging in ages up to ninety, volunteers deliver a bowl of soup, a main meal and dessert every weekday to community members who need help to stay independent. Nonna’s Cucina assists many elderly members of the community stay independent in their own homes for as long as possible. The organisation has a corporate arm which services the aged care sector and offers a catering service.

South Australian food identity Rosa Matto is one of the many volunteers who helps in the kitchen with Nonna’s Nancy and Mary making wonderful desserts and biscotti.

Such is the inclusive nature of the organisation a number of prominent public officials volunteer their time to make a difference. The ongoing support of Maggie Beer is much appreciated.

Executive Officer Kelley Russo and her team of employees and volunteers take a proactive approach to managing food safety with Nonna’s Cucina being HACCP certified, a higher level of food safety assurance than many other organisations serving food to vulnerable populations.

As a board member, I fulfil the role of food safety champion. Food safety governance is as important as any other aspect of governance. With other board members we ensure the organisation operates effectively, ethically and complies with all laws and regulations.

Nonna’s Cucina has its own successful recipe for success: fun, love, passion, empowerment, leadership, effective management, communication and meeting regulatory requirements.

As Maggie recently penned “Nonna’s Cucina is well ready for the times ahead”.
